น้ำส้มควันไม้ หรือ น้ำส้มไม้ เป็นของเหลวสีน้ำตาลใส มีกลิ่นควันไม้ เพราะได้จากการควบแน่นของควันที่เกิดจากการเผาถ่านไม้ ในช่วงที่ไม้กำลังจะเปลี่ยนเป็นถ่าน

น้ำส้มควันไม้ได้จากธรรมชาติ จึงไม่เป็นพิษต่อสิ่วแวดล้อม มีประโยชน์กว้างขวาง เช่น

• ในการเกษตร ใช้พ่นลงดินเพื่อฆ่าเชื้อจุลินทรีย์และแมงในดิน รักษาโรคเน่าเละจากเชื้อแบคทีเรีย โรคโคนเน่าจะเชื้อรา ไส้เดือนฝอย หรือฉีดพ่นใบพืชและรอบโคนต้นทุก 7-15 วัน เพื่อไล่แมลง ป้องกันกำจัดเชื้อรา ไส้เดือนฝอย 
• ในอุตสาหกรรม ใช้ผลิตสารดับกลิ่นตัว ผลิตสารป้องกันเนื้อไม้จากเชื้อรา และแมลง ผลิตยารักษาโรคผิวหนัง เป็นต้น
• ในบ้านเรือน เช่น รักษาแผลสด ดับกลิ่นห้องน้ำ ในครัว บริเวณชื้นแฉะ ถังขยะ กรงสัตว์เลี้ยง 
• ในปศุสัตว์ ใช้ลดกลิ่นและแมลงในฟาร์มปศุสัตว์ ใช้ผสมอาหารสัตว์ เพื่อช่วยการย่อยอาหาร และป้องกันโรคท้องเสีย เป็นต้น

ถึงตรงนี้ สงสัยมั้ยว่าโครงการหลวงไปตัดไม้ที่ไหนมาเผาทำถ่าน และน้ำส้มควันไม้?

ซึ่งคงต้องอธิบายยาวยืด ตั้งแต่โครงการหลวงมีการส่งเสริมการปลูกป่าด้วย ไม่ใช่ปลูกผักอย่างเดียว และป่าที่คนจะยอมปลูกคือป่าที่ต้องสร้างรายได้ด้วย ดังนั้น จึงต้องหาไม้โตเร็วมาปลูก เช่น เพาโลเนีย กระถินดอย ฯลฯ ตอนต้นเล็กก็จะปลูกถี่ ๆ พอโตหน่อยมันก็จะเบียดกัน ดังนั้น เราจึงต้องมีการตัดสาง (แบบว่าตัดต้นเว้นต้น ต้นที่เหลือก็จะมีพื้นที่ให้โต ไม่อึดอัด) แล้วเอาไม้ที่ตัดสางนี่แหละมาทำเฟอร์นิเจอร์ ของที่ระลึก แล้วแต่ขนาด และคุณภาพของไม้ ส่วนที่เหลือสุดท้าย ก็เอาไปเผาทำถ่าน และเก็บควันมาเป็นน้ำส้มควันไม้

Wood vinegar, also called Pyroligneous acid, is the fulid or sap derived from tree cells, which exhibits exceptional permeability and sterilizing properties. It’s used in physiotherapy, for minor pain relief and to decrease swelling in the body. Wood vinegar has also traditionally been sued as an insect repellant, deodorizer, antibacterial agent, sterilizer, alkaline bath and wash, and food additive.

Wood vinegar is botained by the dry distillation of wood. This is a development of the traditional process of charcoal berning or the burning of wood in an airless condition reducing it to a charcoal rather than a carbon dioxide, water vapor and ash. In the process of wood distillation, a chamber of firebricks in substituted for the mound of earth, and a device is added to collect and cool the vapors released to condense them. The condensate consists of pyroligneous acid and a tarry residue, which will separate and settle upon cooling.

Royal project made the wood vinegar from the tree, that it’s from trimming of the reforestation area, not from the nutural forest area. The reforestation area have to trimed when the trees grow up and restricted. Trimed trees will made the furniture, souvenir and remains are made charcoal and wood vinegar. They are make an income to the farmer.  

The best reforestation is use the local people and they can have some income form the forest without destruction.
